The Librariest

Bog Child is a skillful encapsulation of two historic time periods that your average state-side student would be entirely ignorant of. Iron-age Europe and the latter 20th century political Troubles of Ireland. I particularly liked how the two seeming unrelated events drew tighter and tighter similarities as the stories drew to their heartbreaking conclusions. I had a hard time hanging on to this story and kind of bogged (apologies for the use of verbiage) down in the middle. I never reached that point I look for when discovering my favorite books, where I'm willing to ignore everything up to and including my own young being abducted by wolves, to find out what happens next. But as I drew toward the conclusion I was happy I stuck with it. Not by any means what you would call a joyful read, but thought provoking it is. I am so sad we will never get more from this author. I had to consult an Irish friend of mine for glossary information. No dummying down here for your mainstream American audience. I do wish it wasn’t taken for granted that we would all be familiar with the political climate of Ireland of 1981. I could have used a wee more insight as to the historical situation. My Irish friend is on retainer to give a history lesson.
